Yesterday’s special press event for upcoming Swedish films and documentaries at the Swedish Film Institute was heavily attended – and Love During Wartime, presented there also, received considerable attention. Swedish daily newspaper Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) picked up on director Gabriella Bier’s strong personal connection to the subject. Although being both Jewish and a documentary filmmaker, Bier at first actually tried to distance herself work-wise from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but in the end found herself unable to do so.
Daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter (DN), meanwhile, writes about the difficulties the team had at first in trying to find a suitable couple that wasn’t faced by the daunting prospect of so publicly confronting their problems head-on. This is one of the reasons it took nine (!) years to complete the film.
Finally, DagensETC has a big interview with Bier, where she tells about her view on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the process of creating the documentary.
Director Gabriella Bier and producer Tobias Janson during yesterday’s press event (Swedish-spoken):
We can finally update you on the Love During Wartime screenings in Stockholm (Bio Rio, Jan 19-22), Göteborg (Roy, Jan 24 & 25) and Malmö (Spegeln 27 & 28)!
Multiple special screenings are scheduled in all three cities, including the official premiere, a Q&A screening, a special breakfast- and panel screening and even a special ‘baby cinema’ screening. Director Gabriella Bier as well as the film’s main characters Jasmin and Osama will be attending multiple screenings. Head over to the Screenings page for detailed info for all dates, cinemas and events!

“[...] One can see the truth behind the Israeli/Palestinian conflict—behind the rockets and the gunfire there are real families, just like any, trying to live in peace. Not exactly the major crux of the story, but it was relieving to see past the barricaded wall of the Middle East.”
Love During Wartime will be screened at the Jerusalem Jewish Film Festival, on December 20! More info here.
Also, Love During Wartime screens at the Watch Docs Film Festival in Warsaw, Poland, tonight and on Monday (12/12). The film will also be part of the Travelling Watch Dogs Festival (Poland) and Discussion Clubs (Lithuania) throughout 2012, with screenings in provincial cities and towns, accompanied by lectures, discussions, workshops et cetera.
It’s official: LDW is coming to Swedish cinemas! The film will premiere on January 19 at Bio Rio in Stockholm and will also screen in Göteborg and Malmö. For more information, see the Screenings page.
